Michael
Dore is one of England’s
most successful solo concert and recording artistes. Born in Grimsby
and trained at the Guildhall School of Music, London, Michael began his career as a member
of the Internationally famous Swingle Singers. His international career has
taken him to Carnegie Hall in New York, the United States, Canada,
Europe, South Africa, the
Far East and the Caribbean.
He has performed with many of the World’s leading orchestras,
including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Boston Symphony,
Orchestre National de Lyon, the Canadian Brass, the Bangkok Symphony, Orchestre
Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, MDR Sinfonie, the Leipzig Symphony, RTE
Orchestra and the London Pops Orchestra. He is a regular featured soloist with
the BBC Concert Orchestra, with whom he has recorded 4 albums, and the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he has recently recorded 3 new albums.
He performed "Songs from the Shows" with the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk
in Leipzig, the Norwegian Radio in Oslo & with the London Pops Orchestra in Eire, as well as Bernstein’s " Mass" with
the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He toured in Europe,
in Steve Reich’s "Hindenberg"(with Ensemble Modern) ; in
"The Magic of Broadway" and in Walton’s "Fascade".
Michael was Sarah Brightman’s guest in " By Special
Invitation"and has worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company & the
Royal National theatre. He played Riff in " West Side Story", with
Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Peter
in "Jesus Christ Superstar" with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Michael
performed "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber" at the Chichester
Festival and played Rupert Brooke in the premier performance of the musical,
"Young Apollo".
He has performed Berio’s "Sinfonia" with the Prague & Chicago Symphonies & the
Berlin Philharmonics (the latter being transmitted live on Japanese TV). He
also performed Berio’s "Canticum" with the Rascher Saxophone
Quartet in Boston,
Mass, and "Stimmung" (Stockhausen) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall,
broadcast live on radio 3. His recent appearances have included the Cathcart
Spring Prom at the Royal Albert Hall (with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra);
an "Operetta Gala"(with the Milton Keynes City Orchestra); "Best
of the West End" at the Hampton Court Palace festival & " Guys
& Dolls" and "West End Winners" at the Royal Festival Hall,
London and Symphony Hall, Birmingham ( with the BBC Concert Orchestra), a
Bernstein concert with the RTE Orchestra in Dublin and also "Sinfonia"
with the Chicago and Boston Symphonies, “Songs from the Shows” in
Sweden and “Wonderful Town” with Sir Simon Rattle in Berlin with
the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
2002
saw Michael on a "Fascinating Rhythms" tour in the UK and a "West End Nights, Broadway
Lights" tour of Scotland.
He performed "Desert Music" in Lyon, France, followed by concerts in Sweden, Portugal , and with the Orchestre
Philharmoniqe de Monte Carlo. He performed "The Glorious Musicals" at
the Royal Festival Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and with the
London Pops Orchestra for the Rodgers and Hammerstein Gala . His performance at
Christmas with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall,
conducted by John Rutter, featured some of the selections he recorded for their
Christmas 2002 album. He ended the year in Berlin,
with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, in "Wonderful Town",
conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.
2003 opened with concerts in Budapest, Amsterdam, Boston and Cleveland . He
successfully launched his new Cabaret show, “Michael Dore sings the Great
Composers” at Knightsbridge’s “Pizza on The Park”.
Michael also completed background vocals on that Summer’s new film
releases, “Pirates of the Caribbean”
and “League of extraordinary Gentlemen”. He can also be heard on
the soundtracks to “Lord of the Rings”, “Harry Potter”
and “Star Wars-the Phantom Menace” . He also recorded a track for a
new BBC TV film, “The Visitors”, and completed work on a new
musical of Dickens’ “Great Expectations”, playing the part of
Joe Gregory, and singing for the first time, “The Common Truth”.
His 2003 recordings were “Here Come the Classic—the
Musicals” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and Nigel Hess’
“Shakespeare Music.” He closed the 2003 season with performances in
Bratislava, with the Slovakia Philharmonic, and
in Belgium
with the Spectra Ensemble. Along with his Christmas Show in Grimsby,
Michael again appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Croydon and Watford, for their Christmas concerts.
Performances in 2004 included concerts in London
with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Europe, the United
States, and his debut solo concert in Johannesburg, “Michael Dore sings the
Musicals…and more .” He opened London’s newest performing
venue, Cadogan Hall, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and performed
concerts in Sweden and Spain, along with completing background vocals for the
films, “Shrek 2”, “The Passion”, with Mel Gibson, and
“Troy”, with Brad Pitt and more “Harry Potter” . The
released 3 cd set "Curtain Up" was re-released by Warner Classics
with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Michael recorded selections from
“Beautiful and Damned” with conductor Larry Blank. He closed the
2004 season as a special guest on the Saga Christmas cruise to the Caribbean and began 2005 with a Gala concert of Nigel
Hess’s Shakespeare music, “ The Food of Love” at Cadogan
Hall, narrated by Dame Judi Dench and Patrick Stewart. His first collaboration
with Nigel Hess was on the album 'Chameleon', which received critical acclaim
and was re-released later that year by popular demand.
Highlights of 2005 included a special concert in Oklahoma City with the
Oklahoma City Philharmonic and American arranger/composer Larry Blank,
performing at the 10th anniversary concert for Musical Stages magazine and his
Broadway concert at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra. Film recordings in 2006 included "A Good Year", "Da
Vinci Code" and "The Omen" along with Paul McCarthy's "Ecce
Cor Meum" album. Michael recorded his third album with the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra, "Best of Broadway" and performed this in
concert at the Royal Albert Hall . His "Food of Love" concert with
Nigel Hess was once again performed, this year at the Henley Festival and for a
private evening at Buckingham
Palace.
Michael began 2007 filming and recording for the movie
"Sweeney Todd" and Cole Porter concerts in Scotland
and London. In
February, he was invited to perform on the Variety Club international telethon
in Iowa with Canadian jazz icon Michael Danso,
then returned to the US
again in May for concerts with the Boston Symphony before heading to Belgium.
Michael was the vocal coach on Andrew Lloyd Webbers "Any Dream will
do" BBC television series, assisting television coach and judge, Zoe
Tyler. While not working on the weekly television appearances, he was busy
recording soundtracks for some of the season's popular films, including the
sequel to "Pirates of the Caribbean"
and "Transformers" . Michael closed the 2007 season
with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan
Hall and began 2008 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Lincoln
Centre in New York.
A hectic European recording schedule for Readers Digest and serving as vocal
coach for Sky TV's Hairspray..the school musical, along with sell out
"Best of Broadway" concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and Christmas
concerts with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, kept Michael busy throughout
the year, performing for the first time at the O2. He closes 2008 with
Broadway concerts in Bochum, Germany with the Bochum Symphony on New Years Eve
and New Years Day.
He continues to make frequent appearances on BBC Radio's "Friday Night
is Music Night", and maintains a busy and varied performing schedule,
performing semi-classical, Broadway and Jazz programs and intimate Cabaret
evenings around the world. Michael is committed to highlighting the
Variety Club mission, “never say no to a child in need” and his
“Michael Dore sings the Musicals and more" concert in Johannesburg was for the
benefit of their Child Rescue Centre. He recently co-hosted the Iowa Variety
Club Telethon and was part of the celebrity cast of performers.
